Great Gatsby Essay

4. Describe and analyze a lesson that Nick tells or teaches the reader in his retelling of the events in The Great Gatsby.

I think this overall book gives one big point or lesion throughout the book, you may see little things through the book hinting it but in the end you see it the most. The lesion I see is that every one is there for them selves. They go for what they want, not caring about the consequences of others physical or mental condition. In the book people cheat on each other, hurt people, and one person even got away with murder and while doing so they weren’t disturbed at the thought at all. A man is married to this woman and he cheated on her with another woman. He even kisses his mistress right behind the mistress’s husbands back. The man cheating also bosses around the mistress husband as if a superior and better. Another single man is with the wife of the cheating husband too. Now this new guy uses an “old sport” or friend that is related to this girl so that he could get with her. Since most of these people are rich they can spend money and buy whatever the person wants to buy their happiness and co-operation so they can get what they want. When the original mistress mentions the man’s real wives name the man just breaks her nose. With blood going everywhere the guests decide its time to go and just get up and leave. In the elevator on their way out they just talk about average things “so lunch tomorrow” with the response of “sure” as they walk out of a abusive fight. Near the end instead of getting in a car accident one of the girls decide to run over and kill her husbands mistress. But not just that she lets some one else take the blame. A man that loves her takes the blame and he can since it was his car that hit her. He gets shot and killed from the husband of the now dead woman and then the shooter kills himself. No one cared, no one even comes to the funeral of the man that took the blame except his one friend, father, and a stranger with big glasses. The real murder just skips town doesn’t tell any one not even her relative and probably comes back in a little when it calms down and every one forgets in a few months. Every one uses each other to get something for themselves and not caring about what the others got coming to them.

blog #27 Nature Blog

1. How did you react to the idea that even in the 21st century, there are still parts of California (and the world) that are completely undiscovered? What does this make you think & feel?

I am somewhat surprised that there were unexplored places in the world but I of course new not every square inch has been charted and mapped. I can see how it is unmapped and people might not have been there for many years but people can never know if some one a thousand years ago might have walked through or not. How ever I am still surprised that if people where finding giant trees on the California coast you think some one would think what if there are bigger ones in further back valleys or neighboring valleys.

3. Before people started exploring the tree canopies, many people assumed it was like a desert up there (barren of life). It turned out to more like a coral reef (teeming with biodiversity). Why were so many people so wrong? Why did they make the wrong assumption? What lessons should we learn from these discoveries?

I think many people think trees are barren because if you just climb a tree or look at it, it doesn’t appear to have anything on it except the bark and the trees. Most people when they grow up don’t climb tree’s thinking its irresponsible and that they don’t need to because they can see what’s in the tree by looking at it from the ground. The lesson should be don’t just give a quick look and declare what’s in the tree look closely and observe all the tree not just the part you can see from the ground.

Great Gatsby the Beginning

1.
The main character is Nick Carroway and he seems to feel like a loner in his new place in New York. His family wasn't from there but he moved there working on bonds. He doesn't seem too social or too friendly but he still gets along with people.

2.
I think he choose this guy because he his more unique then the others so far in the story. All his Friends and family seem to be rich and he doesn't seem to have that much. Also everyone else seems fast pasted and they get bored easy where as he takes things slower and stays on topics for longer. If he choose someone else it would sound like that character is just like every one else in the book.

Critique a professional example

1.
It has very good graphics it is very clear and can see the specifics in the picture. Also it has the video of the Galaxy and solar system with different angled views instead of just a still picture. I think this works because when the person tells you info you are interested but get to watch and see what they are talking about as well.

2.
The message seems to be an explanation of how small the world we live on is and where it is located. I know this because the entire video is very detailed on showing the different planets and how small ours is. It also shows Solar systems and the universe which shows that our galaxy is small itself.

3.

I think this is intended for every one because every one on earth should know how small we are and our planet compared to the rest of space. This would be a very good video to people that like space too since it have some very good shots and angle's of different parts of out solar system.

4.

In the video it shows everything side by side it also does zoom ins to show how something so small on a solar system is bigger then our planet our probably our galaxy.

5.

One technique that this video uses is that when they mention something say a solar system they show one, if they say earth a 3D floating picture of earth. I think this is used because the universe is very big and not too many people know all the solar systems and Galaxy's by name .

6.

I choose this piece because it is very interesting and I like astronomy also. It had very good video quality and showed some very cool views that when I was younger probably wouldn't have thought of.

Newspapers and MSB

From writing a newspaper article I learned how to state basic facts quick and easy to understand. No complex page long description of something just a couple paragraph description and what a few people said with quotes. I can apply this to Media Saves the Beach by when doing my writing or video to just show important interesting facts and what people say not a boring long list that takes too long to say.

MSB comments, ideas, plans, critiques and more!

From Hallie Chavis and MSB Questions, It gave me some idea's to look at a wider search for projects I could work on. When some one mentioned the Gyro i thought that's interesting and moved on and just took it as that questions been done. How ever she took it to the next level and asked more questions like are there more then one?
Her idea's where well written out simple to understand and had good questions.

From Shanna McCue and Possible MSB Products, I took from this that there can be more then the few ways that you said to take a picture. Yes I knew that there were different styles when taking a picture but I didn't think about painting, or using Photoshop, or any of those other side styles out there that are a little more complex.
This seems like a very neat and unique idea easy to follow however painting might take some time.

From Ben wasserman & Some Product Ideas, This helps and reminds to be very specific and have it understadble also. Detail is importent dont just have a picture of something though and you know what it means have it so when some one see's it they know what it means.
His is good clear what he wants shows you good examples and tells you just what you need to know.

Idea's for MSB

Idea #1

For my first idea I would like to do something with the San Diego river and use a photo essay part to do this. The question would be something like where would the San Diego river be most polluted and by what.

I choose this picture for an example because in this picture the river goes right under a major bridge and there are buildings in it. I think I can take from this that I can show the river and the life around it but also the buildings and cars. I can take the background have a big picture but not this big so it might seem unclear on what I am doing.

Idea #2

For a second idea I was think of doing something with the TJ river and it polluting the beachs of IB. It would be a video of IB, the signs, and maybe TJ water running from the river mouth. My question would be something like what is the water quality in IB and why what caused it to be so bad.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQjBuE7LqtQ

I like this video it is how ever just one person talking but it tells you what you need to know. What i could take from this is maybe interveiw a few people that surf or live down there near the IB beach. I could also take that they got footage of TJ and some run off which was very good to show people what he was talking about. I also could take the angles if i interview someone have different angles because if its just a close up of some one talking it could be boring to the viewers.

Industrialization and Coastal Environments

So three years ago, when Allegheny Energy decided to install scrubbers to clean the plant’s air emissions, environmentalists were overjoyed. The technology would spray water and chemicals through the plant’s chimneys, trapping more than 150,000 tons of pollutants each year before they escaped into the sky.

1. There are these coal plants and they used to have tons of acid rain with thick layers landing on people and their property. Now with these Scrubbers they clean it before released into the air but these cleaning products are released into rivers that supply people nearby with fresh water. Now that environmentalists got one thing done they are moving to the next thing to complain about, the pollution of the scrubbers.

2. They do not show the plants perspective since the writer is for the environmentalists. They have no quotes trying to support their side.

3. Contact the people in the article to find out what went on from there one person I believe I could contact them through the website.

Civil War Continues

Although the Civil War has been over for many years numerous people in the south are still proud of the confederates and what they fought for. In at least one town the war is apparently still going on. The first civil war related death in over one hundred and thirty years has just occurred. a lot of people in the south don’t like change and remain faithful to the confederates. The rednecks and the African Americans don’t get along; both sides fight, argue, and die often times because the confederate flags are placed throughout the city, they are placed in businesses, cars, and even as a part of a school’s mascot. Now some one has paid the price.
Michael Westerman did not agree with the beliefs of the KKK, or with those loyal to the confederate yet he was the one that took the blow. He did like joking and playing around which annoyed some people. How ever he was not a member or a part of an organized group. When someone is angry they sometimes take it out on the next person the see that reminds them of what they are angry at. In this case it was Michael. He was shot through the heart and killed while driving with his wife. They were going out for the first night in weeks just after their twins had been born. He stopped for gas at a little gas station and when they left a few cars followed him down the road. A few miles down and across the border into Tennessee one of the kids claimed he had a gun, he did. The gun shot numerous times and hit Michael but somehow left his wife untouched. They then tried to box them in with the cars but Michael’s wife was able to grab the wheel and make a run for it. The war was unofficially revived. This event caused both sides to take more violent and drastic actions.
More people join both side because they both advertise and recruit in public places, it’s not some secret underground organization. They have a KKK recruitment van on the street. People hand out fliers that preach their ideas and beliefs. Both sides yell insults; taunt each other, and wave flag symbols or emblems. When a person is called names, put down, and antagonized because of race they eventually get sick of sitting there and taking it. They began to fight back and make groups of there. This is exactly what happened in some of these southern states, states like the one on the border where Michael Westerman and his murderers live.
It seems the Civil War is still going on. People are still racist and too proud of their past. African Americans either sit in silence or lash out in violence rather then taking it to court. Those that support the confederate and its flag refuse to see others perspectives. Southern rednecks like the confederate flag but they abuse the use of it. Instead of the flag representing, in a non-confrontational manner, memories or pride of the past, many rednecks wave it around at other races while yelling insults. Although Michael’s wife denied it according to Freddy, the murderer, one of the main reasons Michael was shot was because Freddy and the other kids he was with said they saw a hand reach out shake the flag and yell “nigger”. Although they were initially provoked to fight Michael upon seeing a confederate flag on his car they considered backing down. However upon seeing this they were once again incited to violence.
Those apposing the confederate flag say it represents racism and should be removed from buildings, schools, and other government buildings. The confederate followers say it’s just a flag. The southern rednecks complain it’s like taking away their rights. They say they now have less rights than the minorities. In courts they have been deciding whether the confederate flag can hang on a state capitol building. Even with the rednecks protest, the flag was taken down from the state capitol building. The flag should be taken down if people use the flag in a manner that promotes racism. However if it used only as a remembrance and a source of pride it possibly could have saved a life and stayed in the public eye.
Nevertheless the war is still going because one thing happens to one side and the other wants to hit back harder. It escalates until something real terrible happens. This is why the “war” in the south has been going on for so many years.

Blog #12 Ideas for Media Saves the Beach

Is the San Diego River polluted more by where nothing is near it, residential, or industrial?
I started thinking about this because I like the San Diego River and it wasn’t a very popular one last year even though it runs off into our oceans. I used to mountain bike in Santee and the San Diego River goes through there and up they’re the water looks clear and nice. Down here near where it pours out into the ocean it seems to be a little dirtier. So where does this take place along it travel to the ocean? To answer this just take some samples along the river at different stops and find the highest concentration of bacteria or pollutions.

With all the boats and industrial sites on or near the bay how badly does it affect the water?
Well when ever you go over the Coronado bridge or go to Anthony’s Fish Grotto you see all the boats and building right on the bay. When you look down into the water you cant see one foot and on top there is tons of trash with leafs, twigs, and dark brown bubbles. I always wonder if its just because the bay isn’t that big or is it all the people that work on it throwing stuff into the water right next to them. To find this out look around see if there are trashes placed around see how much of it is trash how and how much of it is not.

Watersheds, what are they, how do they work and what one are you in?
I do not know too much about them but I think I this one would be good so I could learn. They are what start communities and every one is in one so why not learn about these teach others about them and how not to pollute the watersheds we are in. To do this look at some maps, interview someone that may work or study this, and take pictures that would show good examples.

Media Saves the beach

I think this looks like a very good project hopefully we get a lot done to help the water and the beaches. I think I would be interested almost any part of it photography, videos, calender, or anything else need done. How ever I do not have good experiences when i go to OB so maybe a different beach would be better for me.

Final Result of Icons project

Artistic Statement
Eli Barber

I was sitting on the counter listing to the radio eating an orange for a snack. I didn’t think too much of it but sure enough the radio was playing music and I was having fun. Most people don’t think about it they just hit the radio on during driving, wanting to dance, or just bored typing up an artistic statement. We didn’t get wireless electricity or the radio by evolution but by some one taking time and trying to master the inventions.
There are some people that are very skilled at this and one of them is Nikola Tesla. Nikola invented many things including AC (alternating current) electricity. He sold the patent to Westinghouse and with that money he invented the radio upon many other things.
Ever since I was a kid I listened to the radio. Whether it was my favorite band or not I was able to enjoy it. From rock n roll, rap, hip hop, jazz, pop, and country doesn’t matter what it wouldn’t be near as popular if we didn’t have the radio to spread them around. Music always helped pass the time on long car trips, painting my houses, or working on a car. It also kept me out of trouble from fighting with my sister. It just seems to make time fly. If you’re in a bad mood just hit a button and the radio is on and it can change your mood fast, to make you feel better. Also if we need one thing we just run to the store and almost instantly have it. We don’t have to do anything no work just to get it that one item. In our school the kids use radios and listen to music as they work or our teachers use it was in example. One time I was painting on a hot day. Just having headphones on and listing to the radio helped make the painting more enjoyable and the time go by quickly. I was painting from board to board and up and down on the ladder getting red paint on my cloths and yet I was still enjoying the music. The painting turned out well and my parents paid me an acceptable amount so I was happy. With money I got I could go out to buy music and games. Playing video games and listening to music is a big part of my life. It passes time and a lot of people do both so more people can relate with each other. Liking video games I started to wonder how they got games on a little tape. I started to wonder more and more how they work. From then on I always asked how things worked and tried taking them apart, yet I didn’t always figure out how to put them back together.
Now I enjoy helping my dad repair cars, the house, and many other items in need of repair, learning more from each experience. Without having a radio to listen to and enjoy I possibly would have not have persevered in what I was doing. Who knows my experience in one of these things could possibly lead into a future career in engineering, mechanics or a number of technician jobs and this could significantly change my future.

Icon Reflection

In this project I realized that when writing I think of a few good ideas and write them all down into a big sentence that doesn’t make any sense. After I write down my stuff I can reread it and make it sound better but if I’m in a hurry and don’t have a chance to reread something it doesn’t turn out too well. Once that is done my writing turns out ok but before that I’ll probably not get to well of a grade.
Well I don’t know if this is a technique but I had two things and at the end put them together and related them. I started out with me and when I was a kid, then switched over to my icon Nikola Tesla some basic info on him then. Then I went back to me using his inventions and how his inventions changed my life. So separate at the beginning but at the end you see how they relate.
If I had time for one more draft I would probably make it longer and just reread it again. For my final I was still in a little bit of a hurry so I didn’t get to make sure everything was good. Also mine felt a little short on how he related to me but I was almost going over the page limit already. Also have had some more people read it then just one person, since I missed school on that part I didn’t get to many of critiques. I think “I didn’t think too much of it but sure enough the radio was playing music and I was having fun.” was a good sentence because it is a good intro to my paper. It also relates to both parts of my essay before I talk about either one too much.

Camera Techniques

1. Artificial Lighting

This one is a possibility because i am thinking about doing my picture indoors or not in direct sunlight. For this style it's just any light used to take the picture other then sunlight ( indoor light bulbs also make the photo yellow.

2. Reflection

This one i might use to make it look something like the Ray Charles reflection in his glass's.
For this style it just a simple reflection of the image through something else.

<--- Picture taken by me

3. Rule of Thirds

This one we went over in class its two lines vertical two lines horizontal and they are all equal distance. For this picture the lower right corners line intersecction would be the centor of the tree. The bottum line would be on the horizon and thats how it works.

I was thinking about using this one just because it is so popular and i am not a good photographer and i think i can take a good picture using this style if need be.

American Icons

The American Flag represents America since it's our flag and it makes people feel patriotic. This icon is important to citizens of America because it represents them all and even additional for the military.
This icon became very important to the American culture since it represents freedom for the citizens. Not freedom for just a few things but for voting, freedom of speech, and much more. When i see the flag it makes me feel patriotic and reminds me of our country.

GOOGLE is a search engine that a lot of people use in America and in our school. It represents how high tech the world is. People can find almost anything on this search engine which shows that any one could have a purpose for it. It is also free and not reserved for the high class that has money but any one that wants to know something. Its importance to America is that it is filled with links to about USA how it came to be and also info on anything else.
It's important to me because I use it a lot and it helps me almost every day through random events. Maybe I have trouble spelling a word or I want to looking up some lyrics for a band, it gives me the answers I am looking for.

Nikola Tesla the inventor of electronics. This guy doesn't just relate to America but the world and almost every one uses what he invented. This guy should be every ones icon because of his inventions even though not too many people think of him as they use his idea's. He invented AC electricity, the radio, wireless electricity, and other things as well but i'll stick with these. Like google even the radio is a common item that most people can acquire and use for cheap. He has effected me majorly since I would not listen to near as much music or do as much electronics if he hadn't invented these items. Also with out wireless electricity we might not be where we are today.
